The door opened.

“The honorable Governor Big Anthony,” a guard said.

I stood up as a tall, balding man with a full beard walked in. His clothes were as nice as anything we had at House Ballmore, which was impressive. A long, black coat hid most of his features.

“Good, you’re awake,” he said.

“I am. Thanks for seeing me. I’d like…”

“Silence,” the guard said as he spilled into the room.

He glared directly into my eyes, his face barely inches from mine. His breath stunk of garlic.

“Settle down, Henry,” Big Anthony said with a scowl then turned to me. “Who are you? And why are you here?”

Before I could answer, Tony walked into the room with a sheepish look on his face. He turned away as soon as I looked in his direction.

“You two know each other?” the Governor asked me.

“No. I was brought up by a band of ravagers…”

“Stop there, dear. It’s not going to work. We have all our spies say the same thing. Is House Ballmore preparing for an attack in our territory?”

He stroked his beard repeatedly while staring at me.

“I’m not a spy,” I insisted.

“Very well. You shall stay here until you’re ready to tell us the truth.”

I wanted to look at Tony, to ask him what the bleak was going on, but it wasn’t worth the risk of his father getting suspicious. For whatever reason, the man I’d taken for a savage refused to acknowledge me. When they were gone, I slumped back to the floor. My entire body ached. It was looking thinner after four days in no man’s land between factory-cities, but it was a diet I wanted to ever try again. All the thought of food and hunger just made it worse, so I attempted to think about something else.
